It is the question we get asked more than any other, and the honest answer is: sometimes, and it depends entirely on the route your traffic is already taking. Anyone who tells you a VPN always lowers ping is selling something.
What ping actually measures
Ping is the round-trip time for a small packet to reach a server and come back. It is not bandwidth. You can have a 500 Mbps connection with terrible ping, and a modest connection with excellent ping. For gaming, voice and anything interactive, ping is the number that matters.
Three things dominate it, in order:
- Distance. Light in fibre covers roughly 200 km per millisecond, and real routes are never straight. A server 5,000 km away cannot respond in under about 50 ms no matter what anyone promises.
- Number of hops. Every router your packet passes through adds a little delay.
- Congestion. A busy link queues packets. This is the one that varies wildly through the day, and the one a VPN can sometimes route around.
When a VPN genuinely helps
Your provider is taking a bad route
Internet traffic does not travel in straight lines. It follows commercial peering agreements between networks. It is entirely normal for traffic from one country to another to detour through a third, simply because that is where the two networks exchange traffic cheaply. If your provider’s route to a game server is roundabout, connecting to a VPN in the right place can shorten it.
The peering point is congested
Even a short route is slow if the exchange point along it is saturated at peak time. If your ping is fine at 3pm and awful at 9pm, congestion is the likely cause, and a different path can avoid it.
Your traffic is being shaped
Some providers deprioritise particular kinds of traffic. Because a VPN tunnel looks the same regardless of what is inside it, shaping that targets specific protocols cannot see what it is looking for.
When a VPN makes it worse
This is the part most VPN marketing leaves out.
If your route is already clean and direct, adding a VPN adds a hop. Your traffic now goes to the VPN server first, then onward. If that server is not on the way, you have made the journey longer, and your ping goes up. Connecting to a server on another continent to play on a local server is the classic mistake.
The rule is simple: a VPN can only shorten a route that was unnecessarily long. It cannot beat physics on a route that was already short.
How to find out in about a minute
Do not guess, and do not trust anyone’s advertised numbers, including ours. Latency is specific to where you are and who your provider is. The same server that answers in 45 ms from Dubai might take 300 ms from California.
- Measure your ping to the game or service you care about, without a VPN, at the time of day you actually play.
- Connect to the nearest VPN region and measure again.
- Try one or two other nearby regions. The nearest is usually but not always best.
- Keep whichever wins. If none of them beat the direct route, do not use a VPN for that game.

A realistic expectation
If your route is already good, expect no improvement, and possibly 5 to 15 ms worse. If your route is genuinely poor, improvements of 30 to 50 percent are possible. Both outcomes are normal, and the only way to know which one you have is to test it.
